Construction work on roads and infrastructure is being done at night more and more these days in order to minimize traffic jams that are always part of the day regardless and to allow the construction workers an opportunity to work when it’s cooler as Sacramento heads into the hot summer months. Unfortunately, there are also several dangers involved with this scenario, and that point was tragically driven home Thursday morning when a crash left a construction worker and the driver of the vehicle in question dead.

According to the Sacramento Bee:

“The California Highway Patrol suspects alcohol may be a factor in the death of a motorist and a worker this morning in a construction zone crash in Arden Arcade.

Nancy E. Richards, 26, of Sacramento, the driver of the car, and construction worker Arnold Placencia, 49, of Sacramento died in the crash near Marconi and Howe avenues.

CHP officer Adrian Quintero said the accident occurred about 1:20 a.m. at the intersection of Marconi and Howe avenues, where a construction crew was repairing a street surface.

He said Richards’ car was westbound on Marconi Avenue when it drove into the construction zone where Placencia was working. Her car struck him and then plowed into a portable compressor trailer.”
