Strollers should be clear indications to anyone behind the wheel to take extra precautions. Of course, that would also assume that someone behind the wheel was fully paying attention to what was happening on the road in order for that obvious step to occur. It seems that one driver’s eyes were distracted from the road just long enough recently in Merced to hit a stroller that was crossing the street, injuring two young girls.
According to the Merced Sun-Star:
“The driver of a 2000 Ford Taurus, 54-year-old Dwayne Davis of Merced, was traveling eastbound on Yosemite Park Way from Glen Avenue.
Davis told officers that he’d temporarily taken his eyes from the road, in order to switch stations on his radio, according to Sgt. Jay Struble.
The girls’ mother saw the Taurus approaching, and stopped in the crosswalk to let the car pass. Davis, however, had drifted left, out of his lane. The car struck the stroller, ejecting both children into the street. Struble said.
Paramedics and police responded to the scene, and both children were flown to a hospital in the Sacramento area.
Struble said Davis had pulled over after the accident and was distraught.
The investigation into the incident is pending. Struble said drugs or alcohol aren’t believed to be a factor in the accident, and Davis was not arrested.
Still, Davis may be charged with an infraction for allegedly failing to yield to a pedestrian and failing to maintain proper lane position.”
Both girls are expected to recover, but injuries can occur with even the slightest loss of focus.
