We posted recently regarding a plan by Sacramento police to crack down on drivers who ignore pedestrians and the laws that govern the right-of-way as they make their way through town. While no one could have predicted what the number of tickets would be, reports from the first day of this operation were surprising to say the least.
According to the Sacramento Bee:
“Sacramento police say they issued more than 50 citations Tuesday to motorists who didn’t stop for pedestrians in crosswalks.
They also towed four vehicles in the operation, said Officer Konrad Von Schoech, police spokesman.
The operation involved plainclothes officers who attempted to cross between the white lines of crosswalks at different intersections across the city. Motorcycle officers and officers in patrol cars idled nearby to catch any motorists who failed to stop for crossing pedestrians.”
Hopefully, this sort of operation will alert drivers to the dangers involved with ignoring pedestrians and with general inattentiveness behind the wheel that can lead to serious injuries and fatalities. Hundreds of people are injured in the area every year in these types of accidents, and pedestrians need to be able to trust the laws that are designed to protect their safety.
Clearly, these 50-plus drivers caught in this operation now understand the problems they could have caused and the disasters that could have resulted under different circumstances. Aside from police scrutiny, injured pedestrians have other forms of recourse against drivers who fail to provide them with the right-of-way. If you or someone you love has been injured in such an accident, you need the help of Sacramento personal injury lawyers who understand how to hold negligent drivers accountable.
