Motorcycles are a popular choice of vehicle in California given the amenable weather that allows them to be used for most of the year and the relatively low cost required to operate them. However, motorcycles are also inherently dangerous because of their small size and the extreme exposure that anyone who’s driving one must endure. Tragically, that exposure proved costly earlier this week for a Rio Linda man who was killed in a collision with a car.
According to the Sacramento Bee:
“A Rio Linda man died Monday when his motorcycle struck a car that made a left turn into his path, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Marcus McGuire, 20, of Rio Linda was riding a motorcycle westbound on Elkhorn Boulevard approaching 26th Street in Rio Linda about 3:20 p.m. At the same time, Mohad Ajmal, 33, of Elk Grove was driving his car eastbound on Elkhorn just west of 26th and was about to make a left turn.
Ajmal began to turn onto northbound 26th Street, according to the CHP, when the motorcycle struck the right front of his car.
McGuire, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.”
Authorities indicated that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor in this accident, but the investigation is continuing. Even if intoxicants were not present in the driver’s system, the situation could give rise to civil liability.
